On top of the main glacier

Vatnajokull glacier is huge, covering up much of SE Iceland. We've been visiting lagoons and icebergs that emanate from the exit glaciers - the tongues of the glacier that pour off the edge. 


But the main glacier is pristine and we wanted to see it better so we took a very steep 4WD road - F985 - up 2700 feet and 16 km to see it. The road is very steep but we had a 2WD diesel, stick-shift compact car, and a guy who was willing to use it:


When you get up high, there are snowfields everywhere:


 At top there is a cabin that serves lunch:


And at 7pm, we were playing on the edge of the main glacier:
